Sharna Jackson
Written by award-winning Black British children’s author Sharna Jackson, Black Artists Shaping the World highlights the breadth and richness of contemporary Black art from across Africa and the African diaspora. The book introduces young readers to twenty-six artists working internationally, offering an accessible and engaging entry point into global creative practice.
Jackson’s long experience in the cultural sector—including roles at Tate in London and Site Gallery in Sheffield—is paired with the curatorial insight of Dr Zoé Whitley, Director of Chisenhale Gallery and co-curator of Tate’s landmark exhibition Soul of a Nation: Art in the Age of Black Power. Together, they present artists working across painting, sculpture, drawing, ceramics, installation, sound, performance, and moving image.
Featuring figures such as Lubaina Himid, Chris Ofili, Zanele Muholi, Emeka Ogboh, Kamala Ibrahim Ishag, Magdalene Odundo, Kerry James Marshall, Faith Ringgold, Amy Sherald, Kehinde Wiley, Harold Offeh, and Larry Achiampong, the book offers a vibrant snapshot of Black artistic practice today. The result is a timely and inspiring celebration designed to encourage and empower the next generation of young artists.
