Atticus Gallery is pleased to present Refraction Index: 1.52, the UK debut of Kazakh-born sculptor Suzanna Voit, whose work fuses material craftsmanship with environmental precision to challenge the stability of visual perception.

Named after the refractive index of standard optical glass, the exhibition features a series of large-scale glass sculptures designed to simulate the appearance of ice, despite their actual solidity and ambient temperature. Each work is situated atop a custom-built plinth embedded with programmable lighting systems. These systems are carefully calibrated to interact with the specific light conditions of the gallery space, transforming the material surface into a luminous, cold-seeming phenomenon that defies expectation.

Voit’s sculptures—ranging from torsional forms to glacial ridges and fracture-like shards—invite viewers into an experience where seeing becomes unstable. By manipulating the colour temperature, angle, and diffusion of light, the works adapt throughout the day, shifting in tone and presence as natural and artificial light change. Morning light reveals stark crystalline sharpness; in the evening, the sculptures appear to dissolve into their surroundings, melting before the eye.

This exhibition is a testament to Voit’s growing reputation as a sculptor of illusion, whose practice brings together material science, perceptual psychology, and contemporary minimalism. Refraction Index: 1.52 continues her exploration of how light, matter, and viewer co-produce a fragile space of belief—where glass can appear to melt, where cold can be conjured, and where truth remains visually negotiable.
